HR – AN AID FOR MANAGERS

When things go wrong, as a line manager it can quickly feel like we’re the one on trial. When do I use formal procedures like capability and disciplinary? How to handle redundancy or dismissal?

HR and employment lawyers necessarily speak their own language. I can translate this into clear guidance so that line managers understand both their own and HR’s responsibilities. This might include negotiating improvement plans or redundancies and planning exit strategies for underperforming individuals.

The critical factor is that no matter how good the HR support, there comes a point where a conversation must be had between you, the manager, and the staff member. Get this bit wrong and you can easily undo all the good counsel and end up in an industrial tribunal. My advice and experience helps managers avoid such distressing and costly outcomes.
